On the beach you find a lot of shells like this - with a single hole at the top of the shell. Where do these holes come from?
They are drilled by a predatory moon snail! Moon snail lives in the ocean. It has a tongue that is hard and has teeth on it!
First the snail wraps itself around the shell of its victim,
then it releases an acid onto the shell. The acid softens the shell. The snail drills a hole in the shell, sucks in the poor mollusk and eats it for lunch or for dinner. My mom makes necklaces from these shells with one hole.
Here is a shell of a moon snail. And this is a piece of a shark eye snail shell - they look alike, but the shark eye snail shell has a black dot on top.
Look at these pieces of shells - who made all these holes?? This looks so pretty as if someone designed it!
These holes were made by a boring sponge. It's boring not because it's dull and uninteresting, but because it bores or drills holes into shells. Why does it do this? Because it needs calcium, and it gets it from shells! We make necklaces from pieces of shells decorated by those boring sponges!
