Another Taylor family home movie I tranfered to digital in 2010, also unique content.
This is a 1977 Super 8mm film - with SOUND - yea, eh !
Other methods were tried prior to 1973 none of which worked all too well, It wasn't until 1973 when a magnetic audio recording strip was added to the film that people could really record original audio tracks with their film video.
This film is also unique because several minutes of it are of Toronto from the top of the CN Tower, and the film video quality is the best I've seen recorded from up there. It includes a very quick recording of the CPR John Street Roundhouse facility where train engines, freight and passenger 'cars' would be maintained and fixed. It was built between 1929 and 1931 with 32 'stalls' in semi-circle, and turning table in the centre to line up with each 'stall'.
It ceased maintenace and repairs operation in 1986 and has since been turned into the Toronto Railway Museum complete with full size railway stock, train operation simulator, and a miniature steam powered train for kids; the home of 'Canadian' Steamwhistle Brewrey; and a 'Canadian' Leon's Furniture and Appliances store.
Also included in this film is the Toronto Santa Clause Parade that year. Unique because it includes one of the last Eaton's floats, rather underdone, but, it was there. This film shows that back then downtown Toronto still for the most part looked like "Canada", instead of "America North" like it does today.
Oh there's the evident creeping Americanization like the CBS "Welcome to Tornto" banner (tres bizarre), and Sesame Street Big Bird float, but you can see lots of Canadian flags, in fact nothing but Canadian flags. I could not spot a single American flag in this parade, nor lining the street. And, no American looking police nor American newspaper boxes either.
Yes, back then, Toronto police cars were an ugly solid yellow, but it was OUR CANADIAN yellow !
Today that street has more American flags on it than Canadian flags, there are American newspaper boxes all over, the police and their cars look and act American, in fact a lot of them are Americans, even the taxi cabs and Canada Post vehicles and door to door deliverers look American. And, well, I won't get started here about TV and Movies and 99 percent foreign ownership of Canada and the over 3 million dual-citizen Americans in Canada who own, control, and run everything here.
Not even the CN Tower, nor the Royal York Hotel, nor Tim Horton's, nor Canadian Tire, nor Hudson's Bay Company, nor the CanadArm, plus most of everything else, none of them belong to Canadians anymore.
HEY ! Don't say that ! This is not about me being a whining ranting anti-american Canadian. It's a very justifiable bad reality that I am talking about here.
And, I have American friends, even American relatives !
What I don't like that is very very wrong and bad for Canada and Canadians is how they have come up here and buy up and dominate and Americanize everything in Canada.
Why do they even have to do all that here, and everywhere they go ?
Most will say they come here because they love Canada, that's it's way better than where they come from.
GREAT ! FINE ! WELCOME !
But then they change everything Canada has or had to be exactly the same as where they come from !!!!
And now almost nothing of Canada exists anymore.
WHY DO THEY DO THAT ?
Tell me "real Americans" would not mind one bit being dominated by foreigners the same way they dominate Canada !!
Just think Donald Trump.
Anyways, hope Canadian viewers enjoy this home movie film for what Canada used to be way back then.
