Our rescue support group gets a lot of calls for burrowing owls that people think are injured simply because they sit in one spot for long periods at a time near to the ground, on one leg, and they don’t fly off when approached.
While there could be something going on where the animal needs assistance for burrowing owls this is all very common behavior.
They live in the ground. They raise a leg to help regulate temperature, they tend to defend their space instead of fly off when approached, and a majority of wildlife sits in one space for along periods at a time.
For birds you can always approach calmly to see their reaction. Do their eye look clear, does a wing look droopy, can they fly and get lift? Of course if you have any questions it is best to call a rehab center that works with raptors.
This burrowing owl did let me get a lot closer than usual so I will be checking on him over the next few days but he also lives in an area where he is very use to people coming very close to him and has probably just gotten habituated because of where he lives.
