Dallas, TX - Less than three hours after the press released the recording of Mitt Romney complaining about the 47% of Americans dependent upon government services, Dallas native Harold Rickey, 52, bought the domain names 47percent.net and fortysevenpercent.com, and sent in an application to copyright the phrase "the Forty-seven Percent." According to Rickey, the value of these properties will "shoot through the roof" as the popularity of the phrase increases.
"Basically," Rickey said in a telephone interview, "I got these URLs, and people are going to want them real soon. If they get popular enough, I can prolly [sic] get a few hundred grand for them."
Ellen Durst, 61, said of her entrepreneurial neighbor, "Ever since [Harold] got that computer last year, he's been talking bout [sic] becoming one of them Silicone [sic] Valley millionaires. I seen [sic] him been reading books on all sorts of different computer things, and I know he ain't [sic] no dummy."
Rickey is just one of many in the burgeoning field of cultural speculation. According to The Leaky Wiki's tech consultant and proud owner of President-Edwards.net and BoratImpersonations.org, "Trying to make money off of cultural trends is much more difficult than people think. Unless you finagle your way into the Legally and Ethically Equivocal Culture Hoarders' Ecumenical Society, you can't really make that much."
Indeed, upwards of 99% of all such websites and product lines fail within a matter of weeks. But Rickey is undeterred, and says that he plans to use the huge income he expects to receive any day now to buy more domain names. "If I don't buy them, some Wall Street fat cat or some Hollywood pinko is going to."
As of publishing, the value of Rickey's domain names have tripled to just under two dollars each.
