Colloquium: Stephan W. Koch

For ultrashort pulses with very high field amplitudes, light-matter interaction enters the regime of "extreme nonlinear optics." In this talk, we will discuss a range of recently observed phenomena, including very-high harmonic generation and strong field ionization of atoms as well as Rabi splitting, transient exciton ionization and the coherent control of the Bloch oscillation dynamics in bulk semiconductors.

Stephan W. Koch has been a professor of physics at Philipp University of Marburg (Germany) and an adjunct professor at the University of Arizona College of Optical Sciences since 1993. He was a visiting scientist at IBM Research in 1981 and 1983 and a Heisenberg fellow at the Goethe University Frankfurt (Germany) in 1985. He spent eight years, first as associate professor and then as professor of physics and optical sciences at the University of Arizona.

Koch received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in physics from the Goethe University Frankfurt (Germany) in 1977 and 1979, respectively. His fields of major current interest include condensed matter theory, light-matter interaction effects in atoms and condensed matter systems, optical and electronic properties of semiconductors, many-body interactions, coherent and ultrafast phenomena, semiconductor laser theory, and microcavity effects.

Koch was recognized with the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize by the German Research Foundation in 1997, the Max Planck Research Award by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and Max Planck Society in 1999, the Prize for the Advancement of Women in Science by Philipp University of Marburg (Germany) in 2006 and the lifetime Outstanding Referee designation by the American Physical Society in 2008.

He was a divisional associate editor of Physical Review Letters from 1997 to 2000 and a topical editor of the European Physics Journal from 1998 to 2005. Stephan W. Koch is a member of the German Physical Society and a fellow of the Optical Society (OSA). He has authored or co-authored seven books, edited one book and authored or co-authored more than 550 publications in refereed scientific journals with more than 15,000 citations. His h-index is 63.
