(1 June 2026) Markets are being pulled in two directions as bond yields surged to 20 year highs, while strong earnings from Nvidia helped lift semiconductor names and strengthened the AI names.
🟢 Green Light
Economic data continues to support AI-exposed Asian equities, particularly in Korea and Taiwan. Korean exports have surged more than 50% year over year, driven by soaring demand for the country's memory chips, meanwhile Taiwan's GDP is now forecast to expand by almost 10% in 2026 following recent revisions. Together, these trends highlight the increasingly tangible economic impact of AI investment across Asia's key technology hubs.
🟡 Yellow Light
Investors have crowded into semiconductor stocks due to their earnings resilience and insulation from broader macroeconomic uncertainty. Should conditions normalise or other opportunities arise, however, money managers may seek to rotate, creating short-term selling pressure even for fundamentally strong companies. Potential catalysts include upcoming mega IPOs such as Space X and a peace deal between the US and Iran.
🔴 Red Light
Australian banks continued to lag the broader market last week, even as other rate sensitive sectors rallied following softer inflation data that reduced expectations for future RBA rate hikes. The underperformance highlights growing investor concerns around slowing loan growth and asset quality, challenges that are likely to remain a headwind for the sector in the near term.
