Txana Mashã, the Shaman: From the Forest to the world
In the midst of the Amazon rainforest, on the border of the state of Acre (Brazil) and Peru, live the Huni Kuī people.
Shaman Txana Mashã belongs to the Kaxinawá Indigenous Land, located in the highlands between the Humaitá and Muru rivers, in the municipality of Tarauacá. The Kaxinawá land of the Humaitá River is currently composed of approximately 650 Huni Kuī individuals, distributed in six villages, each represented by leaders from different social categories, such as health agents, teachers, shamans, artisans, midwives, among others.
Txana Mashã lives in the Mati Txana Mukaya village, also known as Vigilant Village, wich consists of approximately 25 families, totaling 140 people. He has worked as a teacher for 18 years, a profession that was essencial in enabling him to share the teachings of his people with the world.
In this sense, he has become a strong leader and advocate, both within and outside his land. Additionally, he safeguards and practices the ancestral knowledge and wisdom of the Huni Kuī people, which is focused on the world of spirituality, through traditional prayers, stories, and rituals involving the powerfully healing sacred medicines of the forest.
Based on the philosophy of teaching and learning together, the indigenous leader works to preserve the expression of the cultural identity of his people, wich is kept alive in the mind and heart of the shaman.
