Demonstrator for physical mechanisms at stake in sound generation, propagation and transmission

Описание: Besides the scientific and technological developments which constitute naturally an important component of a Marie Skłodowska Curie project, an equally important mission of SmartAnswer is to implement outreach activities beyond the scientific community. A demonstrator has been developed thereto, based on the knowledge and technologies developed by the young researchers recruited in the project.
The demonstrator consists of an open-loop wind tunnel made by separate elements that can be unmounted to ease transportation, for instance to schools, fairs and exhibitions.
The objective of the demonstrator is twofold. It firstly permits a didactic and attractive explanation of the physical mechanisms at stake in sound generation, propagation and transmission. It also demonstrates the effectiveness of the noise mitigation strategies that were investigated in the project, in a perceptive fashion.

The demonstrator is hosted at the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics
VKI is a non-profit international educational and scientific organisation, hosting three departments (aeronautics and aerospace, environmental and applied fluid dynamics, and turbomachinery & propulsion). It provides post-graduate education in fluid dynamics (research master in fluid dynamics, former "VKI Diploma Course", doctoral program, short training program and lecture series) and encourages "training in research through research". The von Karman Institute undertakes and promotes research in the field of fluid dynamics. Extensive research on experimental, computational and theoretical aspects of gas and liquid flows is carried out at the VKI under the direction of the faculty and research engineers, sponsored mainly by governmental and international agencies as well as industries.
