General Note:
My entire intention for these videos is to act as a visual support towards experiencing and embracing the process of art. Trusting the process is one of the most valuable skills an artist can learn. Understanding that art takes time is another. That’s why the only editing that this project has gone through is to add music, insert the artist’s acknowledgements and notes along the way. I want those seeing this to know how much time this took without the timelapse.
Teaching Notes:
Enlarging Images on a Grid Using Positive and Negative Space
Here, I’m working on a few skills.
First, we’re paying attention to the positive (black image) versus the negative (white background). Being able to depict which areas are positive or negative helps us find the subject that we’re drawing.
Second, we’re enlarging the image on a simple 2x2 box grid. Enlarging on a grid is a common practice and usually allows for more squares based on the image and the size that the artist intends on the image becoming. This video’s intention is to break down the concept using the above grid instead.
Third, organizing the integrity of the piece relies on a few basic concepts, such as being above the image while drawing it for the correct perspective, as well as sketching skills with the wrist and elbow to avoid drawing lines too hard. I also touch on making visual notes as to where the contour of the line creating the positive space will be to avoid mistakes.
Also, there's a mention about how cost would be interpreted after practicing the drawing with pencil. Cost is everywhere and effects time as well as money. The cost of time is something you only get back if you're willing to set aside ego for skill, otherwise it is usually spent with no return. In terms of money, the cost is your overhead. If you didn't have to purchase your materials, someone else did. This is true for the worksheet, pencil and eraser I'm using here as well as my recording instruments, etc. As we move on, we're now talking about needing additional, larger pieces of paper, both drawing and watercolor. We also will need watercolor paints, brushes, water dishes, oil pastels and other items that also have larger costs than what's shown in this video. When we decide we've practiced enough, that's when we move on to the next step, not before. This is because the surplus of the next material may be limited. So that overhead cost is something we really pay attention to in art and why it was important to mention here.
Finally, after the initial practice is completed on the worksheet, I show the next enlarged piece as a 9x9” not recorded in this video. That image will be transferred onto a finished wet on wet watercolor painted background to play with the negative space first.
For more information about this, please see the next video.

Note about music over audio instructions:
Until I have a quiet space to record directions, I will be avoiding adding them.
Life happens at my house. It’s loud and alive, silly and spontaneous… During nearly all of my videos, ambient sounds are not the only ones recorded.
