Why are lenders running away from CoreWeave, one of the hottest companies in AI? In mid-October 2026 CoreWeave's bonds fell below 80 cents on the dollar and credit default swaps implied roughly a 60% chance of default within five years, even though the company sits on a $104 billion backlog of contracts with Microsoft, Meta and OpenAI.
The short answer: CoreWeave borrowed about $40 billion to buy Nvidia AI chips, and those chips may age faster than the loans used to buy them. Nvidia now ships a faster chip roughly every year, CoreWeave depreciates its GPUs over six years, and critics like Michael Burry argue the real earning life is two or three. Old H100 chips are still earning higher rent today, so the trigger was the money side: CoreWeave has to keep borrowing to grow, and in October lenders worried the faucet of new money could slow. Secured, chip-backed lenders stand at the front of the line; unsecured bondholders stand at the back, and they ran first.
In this video: CoreWeave's bond selloff, credit default swaps, how CoreWeave's GPU rental business works, its debt, GPU depreciation, Nvidia's Rubin and Feynman roadmap, H100 rental prices, CoreWeave's Q2 2026 numbers, the Firmus IPO cancellation, secured vs unsecured debt, three-year contracts vs five-year loans, and why tech giants like Microsoft, Google, Amazon and Meta can afford AI debt that borrowers backed only by chips cannot.
