If you've pasted the same instructions into Claude or ChatGPT five times this week, you need skills. By the end of this video you'll have your first Codex skill up and running — no prior experience needed — and everything here applies to Claude too. Skills make your AI agent remember a workflow forever, load it only when relevant, and even self-improve when you give feedback.
Think of a skill as an onboarding guide for a new hire: you don't re-explain your process every day — you hand them a document once and expect them to follow it. That's all a skill is: a markdown file of instructions the agent pulls up whenever the task calls for it.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN:
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
1️⃣ HOW SKILLS ACTUALLY WORK Codex keeps every skill's title and description in context, but only loads the full document when it decides a skill is relevant — so you can have dozens of skills without slowing your agent down. And they're composable: the same skill works in Codex, Claude Code, or any agentic tool.
2️⃣ WHERE SKILLS LIVE Plugins → Skills in Codex. I show an installed design-taste skill (just a big markdown file), and you can tell Codex to find and install skills from GitHub on its own.
3️⃣ CREATE YOUR FIRST SKILL BY ASKING One prompt — "I never want em dashes in my writing, make a skill for that" — and Codex uses the skill creator to write and save it to your Personal Skills folder.
4️⃣ TEST THAT IT TRIGGERS In a fresh chat, Codex pulls the skill in automatically for a marketing email ("I'll use your no em dashes preference — this is user-facing copy"). You can also invoke any skill manually with a slash command.
5️⃣ BONUS: RECORD AND REPLAY Another way to create skills — /record-and-replay records your screen while you do a repeatable task, and Codex writes the skill from the recording. Full walkthrough in the linked video.

KEY TAKEAWAYS:
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
💡 A skill is an onboarding doc for your AI — write the process once, never re-explain it 💡 Titles + descriptions stay in context; full skills load on demand — dozens of skills cost you nothing
💡 Tiny preference skills work, but group small rules into bigger skills (one writing skill, not ten)
💡 Skills are portable across Codex, Claude Code, and other agentic tools
💡 If you give feedback, skills self-improve over time

💬 COMMENT BELOW: What's the first skill you'd create — a writing rule, a workflow, or something else?
