Mayor Jacobs speaks on the importance of Constitution Day

"On September 17th, we recognize one of the most important days in American history, the day the United States Constitution was created. The Constitution's framers, fearing overreaching, arbitrary government, put together a document which , on the one hand, granted the federal government limited powers authorizing government to do only certain specified things while on the other strictly prohibited government in other areas.

The result was a framework which maximized individual liberty, recognized that ultimate sovereignty lay not with nobility or elites but with the people at large, and produced the greatest country in history. Unfortunately, over the years, the restraints the Constitution placed on the federal government have eroded. As Thomas Jefferson noted, ""The natural progress of things is for liberty to yield, and government to gain ground."

Nowadays, you even have some who say the Constitution is outdate, obsolete, and archaic, and we need to get rid of it altogether. But if you ask me, the Constitution is more important now than ever. So this Constitution Day, please join me in celebrating one of the most important and influential political documents in history, the United States Constitution."
