England’s form in the 50-over format has been far from convincing since the 2023 World Cup.

Under the new leadership of Harry Brook and head coach Brendon McCullum they are still searching for rhythm and results having managed just one bilateral series win out of seven since the World Cup. The bowling attack features three specialist spinners while Sam Curran and Jamie Overton shoulder pace duties. The big question is how this group will adapt after a long gruelling Ashes campaign Down Under especially in Sri Lankan conditions that demand patience and precision. Sri Lanka meanwhile receive a timely boost with the return of Charith Asalanka. Though he was relieved of the T20 captaincy he continues to play a key role in the ODI set-up.

Dhananjaya de Silva’s return adds valuable experience and depth to the middle order. The hosts have been consistent in this format and are particularly formidable at home. England will need a near-complete performance if they are to challenge Sri Lanka in their own backyard. England have made one change from their pre-announced XI.

Will Jacks misses out due to an illness and Rehan Ahmed comes in. Sri Lanka have made some interesting calls - Hasaranga is the big name missing from their XI also Sadeera Samarawickrama has made way for Dhananjaya's return. These changes maybe keeping in mind the T20 World Cup is just two weeks away.

Pitch Report: "The weather is set and fair. The dimensions - 62 meters and 64 meters square. The pitch looks beautiful. There is a bit of grass but it is to keep it together. The ball will come on at the start but will be a challenge as the game progresses bringing the spinners into play. The average first innings score is 223 but it will be higher today" informs Steve Harmison.

Harry Brook: We would have had a bat first but it is what it is. Zak comes in to open the batting with Ben. Rehan comes in for an ill Will Jacks. Sri Lanka are a massive side at home and we want to do well against them.

Charith Asalanka: We are going to bat first. It looks like a pretty good pitch and we want to put up a good score on the board. Wanindu and Theekshana are resting keeping the World Cup in mind Dhananjaya comes in. We have been doing great apart from the last Pakistan tour. We want to continue doing the same.
