Forest Park in Portland, Oregon is one of the largest urban parks in the US, at 5,200 acres! It feels weird to call it an urban park, because it is—as the name implies—a giant forest.
Hiking in Forest Park is a great all-seasons outdoor activity because it is green all year. We filmed today’s video during a winter hike in January. While deciduous Bigleaf maple trees are the most common species in the park, even without their leaves they are a vibrant green, due to the dense mats of moss and licorice ferns they support.
In today’s video, we’ll share one of our favorite hikes in Forest Park: The 7 1/2-mile Maple and Wildwood Loop trail. Here is the link to the trail's entry on AllTrails so you can find the map if you would like to do the hike yourself. https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/or...
The trail starts from the Saltzman Road trailhead. To find it, navigate to 6099-5991 NW Saltzman Rd, Portland, OR on Google Maps.
The longest trail in Forest Park is the 30-mile Wildwood trail, but people often combine trails and hike shorter loops like the one we’re hiking today. We are considering doing the full Wildwood trail this summer, though, when the days are long enough to fit in 30 miles!
