📌“Muay Lak” and “Muay Kieow”📌
In ancient times, the world of Muay Thai was essentially divided into two categories: Muay Lak (the firm style) and Muay Kieow (the agile style). These are comparable to what we now call aggressive fighters and technical or elusive fighters.
Muay Lak fighters typically maintained a composed guard and moved slowly, not in a flashy manner. They would wait patiently to counter the opponent’s attacks. One could observe their movement by how they pressed their heels firmly into the ground while their toes pointed upward — ready to “Theep” (foot thrust) or “Nep” (poking foot thrust) when approaching a dangerous range. When advancing to punch or strike, they would shuffle forward in small steps, called gradib-gradib, without changing angles/stance. This style made it difficult for the opponent to counterattack, as it presents no openings, and their fists would always point directly at the opponent. They also tucked their chins slightly to protect a weak point — the larynx— which was secretly referred to in code as “burning embers.” That’s because the bare-knuckle punches, only wrapped in rope, can also let fingers point out and, when aimed at those areas, can deliver pain akin to swallowing glowing embers. Such a strike once even led to a historic moment in Muay Thai — the case of Mr. Jia, a Cambodian fighter, at the Lak Mueang arena overseen by Phraya Thephasadin.
As for that “historic moment,” the writer promises to tell it another time. For now, let’s dwell into the history a little longer — as it was a cornerstone in the evolution of Muay Thai.
Muay Kieow, on the other hand, involved light-footed movements and side-to-side evasions, aimed at finding an angle for attack and deceiving the Muay Lak fighter into exposing an opening. These fighters often moved around so much that it tested the patience of the crowd, who sometimes shouted at them in frustration.
One famous match occurred when Phraya Nonthisen was overseeing a boxing event held at the Suan Kularb School. It featured two highly skilled fighters: Mr. Thawin (surname forgotten) from Bangkok and Mr. Phrom Intra-akson from Chaiya. Thawin was known for his deadly kicks — he once knocked out a Burmese fighter named Mong Phai mid-round with a single leg strike.
Phrom, however, was a defensive expert. He shifted and maneuvered so skillfully that Thawin could not land a single kick. Both fighters kept circling and searching for an opening, but neither gave in. The crowd grew impatient and began shouting for them to actually fight. The commotion forced Phraya Nonthisen to grab a megaphone and announce:
“These two are true masters of the art. They can’t just trade blows recklessly. Be patient and watch closely.”
After three rounds, Thawin did not return for the fourth. He had fainted. Phrom — his eyes red like a jungle bird — ran down from the ring, found Thawin, and paid him respect, saying:
“If you had come back for one more round, I might’ve been the one in trouble.”
In the end, Phrom’s whole body was badly bruised from Thawin’s kicks, while Thawin’s face was swollen and battered, with skin rough like kaffir lime — making it painful to wash or eat spicy food for days.
