This version of "Goodnight Irene" comes from The Chas & Dave Christmas TV Special, aired on 12/22/82, at the Royal Club in Guildford, Surry. The band consisted of Eric Clapton on guitar, Albert Lee on guitar, Chas Hodges on piano, Dave Peacock on bass, and Mick Burt on drums.
Clapton's solo on this version shows how much mileage you can get using only the pentatonic scale (minus the end turnaround figure). It's all about phrasing, note choice, and feel!

"Goodnight Irene" is often credited to Huddle Ledbetter, aka Leadbelly, who in turn claimed he learned it from an uncle. From all accounts, it was most likely written around 1888 by a black man from Dayton, Ohio named Gussie Davis. It was then picked up by the minstrel shows, from which Leadbelly's uncle most likely heard it.
This version is played as a waltz (3/4 time signature) in the key of G. The verses and choruses consist of the same 16 bar chord progression.
