In a world wired for constant communication, leadership expert Michael Schonberger reminds us that real connection doesn’t start with others—it starts within ourselves. In this deeply personal and science-supported talk, Michael explores how emotional presence, self-alignment, and heart-centered awareness transform not only how we lead, but how we live.
Drawing on research from the HeartMath Institute and his own remarkable journey—from a life-changing moment of loss to a breakthrough breathwork experience in Banff—Michael reveals how strengthening our “inner signal” creates measurable shifts in our relationships, communities, and wellbeing. Through practices like intentional breathing, emotional recognition, and self-compassion, he shows how we can quiet automatic negative thoughts, build coherence between heart and mind, and step into a more grounded, authentic version of ourselves.
Michael challenges us to move beyond surface-level interactions and into true, human-centered engagement—connection that inspires, heals, and elevates. His message is both practical and profound: when we lead from the heart, we don’t just change our own lives; we lift everyone around us. Mike Schoenberger is CEO of Sunco Communication and Installation Ltd., a 2022 Leaders in Edmonton award recipient, and a passionate advocate for heart-centered leadership. Over two decades, he has helped grow Sunco into one of Canada’s leading business communications companies by leading with vulnerability, empathy, and emotional transparency. Mike began at 17, working alongside his father Paul, whose mentorship shaped his values and leadership philosophy.
A sought-after speaker and mentor, Mike shows leaders how authentic connection—starting with the self—drives meaningful relationships and sustainable growth. He is an active member of Entrepreneurs’ Organization and currently serves as GSEA Canada’s National Committee Director for External Engagement. Mike also mentors through IMYeg, the University of Alberta’s Venture Mentoring Service, and sits on the advisory council for NAIT’s Mawji Centre. Away from work, he loves spending time in the mountains with his wife, Jackie. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
