Lesson 1 - Forehand - A shorter take back
Here we look at slightly reducing the backswing. The aim to secure a more consistent point of contact, positioned in front of her body. This adjustment not only facilitates more power into her shots but also allows for effective engagement of the wrist to allow for more topspin effect.
Lesson 2 - Arm extensions
For this drill, we're working on extending those arms through contact. This adjustment is particularly crucial for Claudia, as it will help stay clear of hitting too close to her body, which has been a recurring issue. Already, with this tweak, we're starting to notice a more consistent shape to her backhand.
Lesson 3 - Open stance forehands
One of the main things I'm emphasising with Sienna is her loading on the outside foot. That's where all the power and stability come from in the open stance. So, to really drive that point home, I'm asking her to turn her left knee down toward the ground as she sets up for her swing and then explode upwards when she accelerates forwards.
Lesson 4 - Double handed backhand (extra rotation)
Let's look at refining Eloise's unit turn and follow through, essential elements for a powerful backhand. In this segment, I'm breaking down for Eloise how far she should wrap her racket around her body, emphasising a broader range of motion. This adjustment aims to maximise the utilisation of her hips and shoulders, unlocking more power in her backhand strokes. It's not just about power; this enhanced range will also contribute to achieving greater depth on her shots from this wing.
Lesson 5 - Earn the line
Building upon Bernards foundation, we introduce the down the line shot, accentuating the importance of directional changes and strategic placement. As Bernard works on his accuracy cross court, the drill then allows him to hit the more assertive shot down the line.
Lesson 6 - Take the knee (kick serve)
With the kick serve you must brush up and through the back of the ball to generate the desired top spin. Practising this on one knee will help you stay side on which is key when it comes to the kick serve.
Lesson 7 - Forehand - More spin and power
In this drill, we're gradually progressing to a full swing, and Constance is using half grip to simplify the exercise and for added control. The focus remains on emulating that same steep swing path from the previous drill, with a keen emphasis on brushing up the back of the ball and executing a smooth wrist roll.
However, I did observe a slight tendency for Constance to shift her weight onto her back foot during the shot, which can compromise the overall power of the shot. We made an initial attempt to address this habit, and while it still needs refinement, there was noticeable improvement.
Lesson 8 - Open stance (wide forehand)
In this next drill, we are getting Sienna's to look at handling a slightly wider ball whilst still using the open stance. Sienna pays particular attention to making contact off her outside foot. This means that as she swings through to strike the ball, the bulk of her weight should shift onto this foot. Following this, she needs to carry the momentum generated through the swing and land back on the same foot after making contact with the ball. For a brief moment, Sienna will find herself entirely airborne.
Lesson 9 - Lift the heel
Now, leaving that back heel planted can really put a damper on engaging the hips and shoulders effectively. So, we decided to tackle that too. Once she started lifting that back foot, the transformation was remarkable. Suddenly, her whole body was coming into play, which will eventually allow her to add more power down the line.
Lesson 10 - Breaking down the double hander
This segment allows Bernard to fine tune his form and enhance the fluidity of his backhand stroke. We look at the key checkpoints of the shot which include the take back, the contact, the extension and the follow through.
Lesson 11 - Let the elbow hang
Focus on letting your elbow hang in the follow through. This encourages hitting up the back of the ball and maintaining a side-on position.
