Hello, this is Heisenberg, with a list of all the Godzilla movies that are available on blu-ray, as of Fall, 2014.
First is the original 1954 Godzilla, released by The Criterion Collection. This is an excellent release, and contains both the original Japanese version of the film and the American version. I highly recommend it. Note that Classic Media also released the original Japanese version of Godzilla on blu-ray, under it’s Japanese title Gojira, but this blu-ray is very poor and best avoided.
Next is the 1962 King Kong vs. Godzilla. This is the American version, with just the dubbed English audio.
Next is the 1966 Ebirah, Horror of the Deep, or Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster. This has both the original Japanese audio and the dubbed English audio.
Then there is the beloved 1968 Destroy All Monsters. This blu-ray was released very briefly in 2011 and is being released again this July. The 2011 release had a number of nice extras, but it almost immediately went out of print because Toho, the movie studio that made and owns the film, did not approve all the extras. So the 2014 re-release will not have any extras on it. But both releases have the original Japanese audio and two different English dubs. This movie is a fan favorite, and I highly recommend getting the blu-ray quickly when it comes out in July, in case it goes out of print again.
Next is the 1971 Godzilla vs. Hedorah, or Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster. This movie is actually a favorite of mine, though not everyone feels the same way. This release has both the original Japanese audio and English dubbed audio.
Next is the 1972 Godzilla vs. Gigan, or Godzilla on Monster Island. This also has both the original Japanese audio and English dubbed audio.
Next is the 1973 Godzilla vs. Megalon. This has both the original Japanese audio and the dubbed English audio.
Next is the 1989 Godzilla vs. Biollante. This blu-ray went out of print but is being re-released in October. This has both the original Japanese audio and English dubbed audio.
Now we have a number of double releases. They all have both the original Japanese audio and English dubbed audio.
First is the 1991 Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah and the 1992 Godzilla vs. Mothra.
Next is the 1993 Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla 2 and the 1994 Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla.
Then there is the 1995 Godzilla vs. Destoroyah and the 2000 Godzilla vs. Megaguirus. Godzilla vs. Destoroyah is another fan favorite, and it is the movie I would most recommend to a general audience.
Then there is the 1999 Godzilla 2000, which includes both the longer Japanese version of the film and the American version. This release is on one disc.
Then there is the 2001 Godzilla, Mothra & King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack, and the 2002 Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla.
Next we have the 2003 Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. and the 2004 Godzilla: Final Wars. Final Wars was the 50th anniversary film, and has cameos of a number of the giant monsters from over the years.
Then there is the 2014 Godzilla. There are four versions of this blu-ray in the U.S. The movie is the same in each version. There is the standard 2D blu-ray, the 3D blu-ray, the Target version with an exclusive bonus feature, and the MetalPak version, which has a very nice metal case that also roars. Watch my other videos where I talk more about these four versions.
Of related interest is this release of the 1967 King Kong Escapes, which is from the makers of the Godzilla movies, but does not have Godzilla. This is the American version, with just the dubbed English audio.
Also of related interest is Rebirth of Mothra I, II, and III, from 1996 to 1998. They come on 2 discs. Godzilla does not appear. These movies have both the original Japanese audio and English dubbed audio.
There is also the 1998 American Godzilla film, but I don’t really consider that a Godzilla movie, so screw it.
Now what I have listed so far are all the Godzilla blu-rays released in the United States. This summer all Godzilla movies will be released on blu-ray in Japan, and some are out already. But these Japan blu-rays are very expensive and they have neither English subtitles nor English dubbed audio. Here’s one example of a Godzilla blu-ray only released in Japan: the 1984 Gojira. I bought this from amazon Japan.
Now some Godzilla movies are not available on blu-ray in the United States, but most of those are available on DVD releases, and so are some other monster movies from the same filmmakers. Some of these DVD releases are very good. One of my favorites is this release of the 1956 Rodan and the 1966 War of the Gargantuas. Godzilla does not appear, but these are excellent giant monster movies from the same filmmakers as the Godzilla movies. Again, these are DVDs and not blu-rays.
So there you have it. Enough Godzilla and giant monster movies to keep a person occupied. This is Heisenberg, hoping you enjoy your Godzilla blu-rays.
