For generations, the Chao Lay, also known as the “sea people,” have lived along Thailand’s coasts and islands, relying on the sea as both home and livelihood. With a profound ability to read the waves, winds, and seasons, they possess deep Indigenous knowledge about marine life and the delicate balance of coastal ecosystems. From predicting the arrival of tiny shrimp to designing sustainable fishing tools that avoid bycatch and protect juvenile species, the Chao Lay demonstrate how traditional wisdom ensures both survival and conservation.
This video shares the voices of Chao Lay elders, who explain their close relationship with the sea, their knowledge of marine animals and seasonal patterns, and their community-based practices that safeguard resources for future generations. Their insights are a crucial part of Thailand’s National Ecosystem Assessment, which seeks to integrate Indigenous and local knowledge with science to better understand ecological change and support sustainable management.
