In February of 1998, Time Warner announced the sale of Six Flags to Premier Parks. At the time, Fun Corporation was constructing a new family amusement park in Cypress, Texas. After the industry shaking announcement, Fun Corporation would scale up their new park, Houston Pleasant, to compete with the established Six Flags Astroworld. After working with Custom Coasters International on the park's family wooden coaster, Fun Corporation would once again contact the legendary manufacturer of wooden coasters for a much larger coaster.
Houston Comet would be modeled after Funland's original thrill coaster, Cyclone. Though they feature similar layouts, Houston Comet would stand taller at 130 feet, travel faster at speeds of 65 miles per hour, and traverse a longer course of 6,467 feet. Houston Comet features many "air time" filled hills, moments of high lateral forces, and even a signature CCI trick-track element. Though it's original design also featured a helix, it was designed out to save cost as the park budget ballooned towards completion. After early rides on Zephyr's Gerstlauer wooden coaster trains, Fun Corporation executives would purchase 3 new trains from Philadelphia Toboggan Company for Houston Comet. The coaster would open with Houston Pleasant in May of 2000.
Trivia: The coaster's name comes from the former local WNBA team, the Houston Comets.
