👵🧓Elderly Care Homes and Ancestral Rites Culture in Korea
In Korea, as family structures become more compact and the tendency to form groups weakens, it has become increasingly common not to care for elderly family members directly, unlike in the past. Additionally, due to the financial burden and the impact on individual lives, many families place their elderly parents in care homes with some assistance from government subsidies. Sons often do not visit their parents frequently, and even when they do, the visits tend to be brief. As a result, there is a growing preference for daughters over sons in Korea these days… It’s quite unfortunate, isn’t it?
Also, in Korea, when someone passes away, their remains are often cremated, and the ashes are kept in a designated storage facility. This is one way of honoring the deceased. Another way is to create graves where families hold annual ancestral rites, known as Jesa, to pay their respects.
