When the banners of Caerwyn were finally taken down, only one highlander refused to leave the ridges. Each year, on the first clear day of summer, he climbs to the old marker stone above the valley and rests his hands on the hilt of a sword that has outlived every oath it swore. From there he can see the castles he once swore to defend, roofs glowing like embers in the distance. He does not go to reclaim them, only to remember, and as he stands in the wind among the wildflowers, the valley seems to remember with him, breathing a little slower under his silent watch.
