Vernon Howard (1918–1992) was an American spiritual teacher, author and philosopher. In 1979 he founded the non-profit learning centre New Life Foundation, where he continued to teach until his death. Vernon Howard was a pioneer in a form of therapy known as self illusion therapy which is predicated on five main ideas: (i) self is image in a person; (ii) self is illusion in that it has no separate, permanent and independent existence from the person that you are; (iii) the person that you are is real; (iv) self can’t change self, because self is illusion; and (v) only a power-other-than-self, relevantly the person that you are, can deliver you from your bondage to self.

We are much, much more than those hundreds of little, false selves—all those waxing and waning ‘I’s’ and ‘me’s’ in our mind—with which we tend to identify, in the mistaken belief that they constitute the ‘real me,’ that is, the person each of us is. Only the latter is ontologically real. False selves lead to misery in the form of self-obsession, addictions and the like. There is a way to freedom! We must stop living out of our false selves and find the True Self within.

Howard taught that there is a way out of suffering and misery, much of which we bring on ourselves. The way out requires absolute honesty, constant self-observation and self-awareness, and a real desire for inner change at great depth. A new and higher inner life awaits us when we let go of our negative conditioned ego, that is, our “false self,” which is a fictitious collection of self-images or pictures about who we think we are.

In the words of Vernon Howard: ‘You do not have to acquire your true nature. You already possess it in full. The task is not to add more, but to subtract—illusions, false identifications, inner noise. As you drop what is not real, what is real emerges naturally. Peace, clarity, and strength are not achievements. They are the light that appears when the clouds of delusion clear.’

The liberating idea of self as illusion is to be found in philosophy, religion, spirituality and neuroscience.
