In the 1970s, Heckler & Koch developed a solution for combat divers who needed a firearm that could work effectively underwater: the H&K P11. Designed for elite units like Germany's Kampfschwimmer, Britain’s SBS, and U.S. Navy SEALs, the P11 fired five powerful, 10-centimeter steel darts through a five-barrel system. Each dart was discharged with an electric charge, providing stability even in deep water. However, reloading required the entire barrel assembly to be sent back to the manufacturer, making it complex and costly.
Despite its groundbreaking design, the P11 remained shrouded in secrecy. Heckler & Koch denied its existence for years, and only a handful of units were ever produced. This limited use and lack of general awareness led to the P11 fading quietly into obscurity, leaving it as a nearly forgotten piece of military innovation.
