It took me a long time to heal my relationship with my body and sexuality after growing up in a purity culture. As a licensed therapist, I’ve found that there are a few key things that have helped me in my journey.
1) I sought out a more proper sex education. Goodbye, abstinence only! I talked to whoever was willing about sex and learned that everyone is different. This was vital in helping me understand that there is no one “right” way to do things.
2) I experimented with self-pleasure. This was an important step in learning to love and appreciate my body for all its quirks and imperfections.
3) I read “Come as You Are” by Emily Nagowski. This book was eye-opening for me in terms of understanding the science behind human sexuality. It also helped me forgive myself for what I didn’t know about human development and sexual experiences and for making choices I wouldn’t choose now.
