When Groundhog Day arrives on February 2nd, winter has a firm grip on Chicago — cold, dark, windy, and completely unforgiving to cyclists. Instead of retreating indoors to a trainer, I decided to do the opposite. On this Groundhog Day, I embraced the winter and set out on a 70-mile bike ride from downtown Chicago to Woodstock, Illinois — the filming location of the 1993 classic Groundhog Day.
This winter cycling adventure takes me through Chicago’s frozen Lakefront Trail, along the icy shores of Lake Michigan, and north through Evanston and the North Shore suburbs. Along the way, I pass iconic architecture like Frank Lloyd Wright’s Emil Bach House, ride past Northwestern University, and explore filming locations from legendary John Hughes movies including Sixteen Candles, Home Alone, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Planes, Trains and Automobiles, and Risky Business.
As the ride continues, I follow the Robert McClory Bike Path and North Shore Path before being forced onto busy roads due to snow-covered trails. With fading daylight, dropping temperatures, a flat tire, and low energy, the final miles into Woodstock become a true test of endurance. The reward? Rolling into the courthouse square made famous by Groundhog Day, warming up inside the former Tip Top Café, and catching the Metra back to Chicago after a long winter day in the saddle.
This video is about more than miles — it’s about resilience, winter cycling, Midwest history, movie locations, and proving that adventure doesn’t stop when the weather turns cold.
