The Most Dangerous Hand Tool & How to Avoid Injury - Angle Grinder Safety

In this video I discuss, what I consider to be, the most dangerous hand tool in the shop. There are dangers associated with almost all tools, but i think the most dangerous hand tool of all is the angle grinder.

I consider it the most dangerous tool for a couple of reasons
spins at high RPM
sends metal dust/sparks everywhere

Grinder accidents occur from equipment failure,as well as improper operation and use

Safe Operation Checklist
Never operate a grinder without a guard, it's not worth the risk. The guard ensures that you only use the correct size wheel/disk for the grinder you're using

Always check the disk before use and make sure the max rpm of wheel wont be exceeded for the grinder you're using

Never apply lateral force to wheel, do not use the edge of the wheel to clean up or de-burr material, a cut off wheel is used for cutting, etc. ONLY USE AS INTENDED

Never over tighten the securing nut, this may damage the wheel causing it to fly apart so be careful

Always stand outside the direction of rotation of the wheel, if it does fly apart, you don't want to be in the way

Safety Equipment
Its important to wear eye protection: googles, glasses, face mask, anything. Protect your face and eyes no matter what -- material will fly everywhere

Hot metal shards will burn you, protect your hands and arms

Don't overlook hearing protection, you may not think you need it but you do; protect your hearing

Respiratory protection is the last and what I consider to be the most understated and overlooked. During use, the angle grinder sends metal dust, as well as bits of the abrasive wheel everywhere. You risk breathing this is if you choose not to wear any kind of respirator. Don't wait until it's too late - protect your lungs
