Song Description

“Because He Lives” was written in 1971 by Bill Gaither and Gloria Gaither during a period of social unrest, cultural uncertainty, and personal challenge. The birth of their child in a troubled world led them to reflect deeply on the meaning of Christ’s resurrection. The hymn emerged as a declaration of resurrection-centered hope grounded in biblical assurance rather than changing circumstances.

The theology of the hymn is distinctly Christ-centered and eschatological. The resurrection is presented not merely as a historical event, but as a living reality that transforms fear into confidence and grants believers courage to face tomorrow. The refrain declares the central truth: the believer’s future is secure because Christ is alive. The final stanza anticipates the crossing of death’s river and the ultimate triumph over mortality.
