Bakharwali goats are a breed native to the Pir Panjal range of the Himalayan region, primarily found in Jammu and Kashmir, India. These goats are well-adapted to the cold and mountainous terrain, often reared by the nomadic Bakharwal and Gujjar communities. They are known for their strong endurance, ability to graze on sparse vegetation, and resilience in harsh weather conditions.
Bakharwali goats are mainly raised for their high-quality wool, known as “Pashmina,” used in the production of fine shawls. They also produce meat and milk, but their wool is their most prized product. These goats have a distinctive appearance, typically medium to large in size, with long, shaggy coats that help them withstand cold temperatures.
Their importance to the local communities goes beyond economic value, as they play a vital role in the pastoral lifestyle, providing sustenance and income. However, due to environmental changes and reduced grazing lands, the Bakharwali goat population is facing challenges, leading to concerns about their conservation.
