This is my second copy of the NEO. I bought a drone only version because I have a compatible controller, the DJI RC2. I flew that combo using a XREAL Air 2 Pro AR glasses and report my initial findings here: • First DJI NEO Flight with DJI RC2 and XREA...
Then, the 3-battery Fly More Combo package came followed by the DJI RC-N3 controller. It is odd that the Fly More Combo sold in the US does not come with the DJI RC-N3 controller. Perhaps, it should be renamed as Fly Less Combo because it does not include a controller.
After getting used to with my DJI RC2 controller, I believe the use of the RC-N3 should be similar. Again, I started the first flight with a low flying mission circling the yards. Once I became used to the stick operation and the reactions from the NEO, I flew it to 120m, the max altitude, and farther away around 370m to gain some experience. Here is a list of my findings:
(1) The image quality of the BEO using all default parameters is NOT as good as the Mini 4K, another DJI cheap camera drone. Image sharpening is way too high and should be turned down. Exposure could change suddenly during flight.
(2) Controlling-wise, the NEO is also not as good and smooth as the Mini 4K. Over- and/or under- reaction by the drone can frequently be seen.
(3) Because the NEO only has a 1-axis Gimbal stabilizer, if the camera heading is always the same as the drone flying direction, it is OK. However, if the drone flies sideways, the horizon could tilt to one side.
(4) Although the Mini 4K has better image quality, the NEO is rather smooth when you fly it like a FPV in the normal mode due to its slower speed. You can see the effect at the beginning of this video clip.
(5) Because the RC-N3 does not support USB-C video-out, if you wish to use a AR glass or HDMI capable goggles, you will need some other stuffs. On the other hand, you could use some non-VR goggles to fly the NEO just by extending the DJI supplied USB-C cable long enough. Why am I talking about the use of a goggles or a AR glasses? Simple, your phone's (or tablet's) brightness may not be bright enough for you to see the screen clearly. The use of a goggles or a AR glasses eliminates this problem, but the use of goggles causes you don't have the Light-Of-Sight (LOS) and you will need a visual observer (or spotter).
Will take this NEO to do more shooting if the weather will be cooperate.
