In this Japanese pronunciation video, you will learn about Japanese vowel devoicing. When the Japanese [i] or [ɯ] vowel is between voiceless consonants, the [i] or [ɯ] vowel is devoiced, meaning only the consonants preceding these vowels are pronounced, and the vowels succeeding them are not pronounced.
Japanese vowel devoicing is not limited to between voiceless consonants. It also occurs when the [i] or [ɯ] vowel is preceded by a voiceless consonant and also at the end of a word or sentence, such as desu (です) and masu (ます).
This video also covers consecutive vowel devoicing. If you master Japanese vowel devoicing, it will make you sound more like a native Japanese speaker. For that, there are a detailed explanation and practice for Japanese vowel devoicing in this video.
