Zhuge Liang, the legendary strategist of the Three Kingdoms, faced an impossible situation. Enemy commander Sima Yi was marching toward his city with a massive army. Zhuge Liang had sent his troops away. He was left with only 100 men.
Most generals would have fled. Zhuge Liang did the opposite.
He opened all the city gates wide. He ordered his men to sweep the streets calmly, dressed as civilians. Then he climbed to the top of the wall, sat down in full view, and started playing his lute. Alone. Relaxed. Like nothing was wrong.
When Sima Yi arrived and saw the open gates and the general casually playing music, he froze. This has to be a trap, he thought. Zhuge Liang never makes mistakes. There must be thousands of soldiers hiding inside.
So Sima Yi turned his entire 150,000-man army around and retreated.
Zhuge Liang defended a city with nothing but confidence and a musical instrument. Sometimes the most powerful weapon in war isn't a sword — it's knowing your enemy's mind.
