Helping Verbs and Main Verbs
A verb is a word that indicates a physical action (e.g., “drive”), a mental action (e.g., “think”), or a state of being (e.g., “exist”).
Every sentence contains a verb.
Verbs are almost always used along with a noun or pronoun to describe what the noun or pronoun is doing.
(A Helping Verb) also called (An Auxiliary Verb), is a verb that is used with another verb (or two other verbs) in a verb phrase.
The auxiliary verbs (which include "am," "is," "are," "was," "were," "been," … "has," "have," "had," … "can," "could … "shall," "should, … "will," "would," … "may," "might," … "must," … "do," … "does," … "did,") combine with Main Verbs to do things like show a verb's tense or form a question.
The main verb is also called (the lexical verb) or the (principal verb).
A main verb refers to the important verb in the sentence.
A main verb shows the action or state of being of the subject.
Main verbs can stand alone, or they can be used with a helping verb, also called an auxiliary verb.
