New Zealand has spent the majority of its history in a process of creating and destroying for roughly the past 500 million years. However, 26 million years ago, New Zealand had almost completely vanished beneath the waves of the pacific ocean minus a few outcrops scattered here and there, all of which were very quickly joining the rest of the landmass, in sinking beneath the waves of the ocean.
It was luckily saved by a massive tectonic event that has shaped not only New Zealand's North and South Island entirely but has also produced many islands and outcroppings above the surface of the ocean over a massive area of land. This same tectonic event is occurring in the present day, and in this video, we'll cover both how and why New Zealand almost vanished from existence, as well as what happened that allowed it to resurface in such a tremendous way, to become the huge islands that exist today. We'll be taking a look at the crazy subduction zone that has occurred here, as well as the fault system driving many different tectonic processes, from supervolcanoes to the creation of huge mountain ranges such as what exists in the present-day South Island.
