Chopping an onion is fairly simple to do. First start with a sharp knife. You will also need a cutting board and a chilled onion.
Chilling the onion in the refrigerator really helps keep you from crying too much. It's not perfect but it does help. Also increase the ventilation in your kitchen. Open a window.
First determine which end of the onion is the root end and the stem end. The root end has what looks like a dried root coming out of it.
Slice off the stem end and then cut the onion in half. Peel off the outer layers of the onion. Then make 4 or 5 horizontal cuts, cutting towards the root end. But don't cut all the way to the root.
Keeping the root intact will do two things for you:
1. It will give you more onion to hang onto while cutting it, which makes it easier.
2. It will help keep the onion together while you cut it, so it doesn't fall into a lot of separate pieces. This means easier cutting.
Watch out for your fingers when making these horizontal cuts. We don't want you losing any fingers here.
Once you make the horizontal cuts, now make vertical cuts that are close together. Keeping the cuts closer together means the dice will be smaller. And in the end, this means less chopping for you. And less tears because you get done faster.
After completing the horizontal and vertical cuts, you will then finely slice the onion with more vertical cuts as described in the video.
Continue to cut all around the root end so as not to waste any onion. Run your knife through the onion by chopping a bit more to cut all the bigger pieces that remain.
And that's pretty much it. Just be careful!
Hope that helps you cut, slice and chop an onion easier and keeps the tears to a minimum.
