"Double Dragon" (known in Europe as "Double Dragon: The Revenge of Billy Lee") is an original game in the Double Dragon series and is not based on the original Arcade game (despite using its artwork for advertising purposes), created by Virgin Interactive in 1993, and is a fairly rare game in the U.S., but you probably won't care because it's not like any DD game I've played, and it's pretty mediocre as a whole. It's also, somewhat surprisingly, not a port of the SMS game. In the game, you play as Billy Lee who is out to avenge the death of his brother (which explains why the game is only one player) who was killed by the Dragon Clan and you'll travel from city to city to find and kill the Dragon Clan leader.
In the game, Billy has a basic combo, extended low kick, a low jump kick in place, a long range flip kick, and a raging dash attack (consumes some health when used but is infinite on your last yellow bracket). He can also pick up wood boards and "guns" such as a pistol or shotgun, which is a first for a DD game. There are also a few items such as a star, continue, and heart (to restore lives). As you progress, your max vitality increases. The game isn't quite as bad as I've heard, but there are several problems with it. First and foremost, the game is very difficult the first time you play it, but the second or third time (once you notice the enemies' patterns), it's too easy until you get to the fourth level, where you'll start losing continues. This is because the computer has little in the way of A.I. and most opponents can be beaten just by luring them into you by moving sideways until you're "inside" them, which can even off a few of the bosses and mini-bosses with ease. Another problem is that picking up items can be problematic, but there's a reason for this; weapons can be reclaimed before they disappear and can be used infinitely in this way, so areas with guns can be cleared with extreme ease as long as you don't let enemies get close.
The graphics are pretty good for a GG title, but are awkward; screen scrolling and certain background elements move smoothly (such as the train stage, where the city passes by at 60FPS) and the game has a nice use of colors, but characters have terrible animation and this makes landing certain attacks difficult. Thankfully, the game is not particularly difficult to play as a result because the collision detection for attacks is mostly good. The music doesn't really echo the greatness of the original DD scores, but it's not bad for Game Gear in all honesty, and boss music is actually pretty cool. Overall, the game is a novel collectors item but an average beat-em-up with its only stand-out feature being that Billy can shoot people with guns.
While I captured up to the fourth level (where I lost my first credit), I can only fit the first two levels in this sample. Enjoy.
