Come behind the scenes and watch how an underground cable and pipe locating company tests and checks their equipment.
In this video, Ben Minutoli, manager of Geelong Cable Locations, takes us through and shows how the guys go through and check and test their equipment to make sure everything’s in good condition and working well.
Today, they’re checking the push rods.
They use the push rods to locate optic fibre cables, storm water pipes, sewer pipes and any other conduit that doesn’t have a conductive cable running through it.
In the video, you get to see a range of the different rods we have available, and Ben talks through and explains what each one is used for.
We test the rods roughly every 6 months, just to make sure they’re working well and we’re getting a good signal running through the copper lines that are inside the fibreglass rods.
It does involve taking the service locating vehicles off the road, which is frustrating as it means we can't take any bookings on the mornings we complete this task.
However, it’s a necessity, because the last thing we want to happen is to get out to a customer's site and then find our equipment isn’t working as it should be.
If you have any questions, or if you think we could use a push rod to locate some underground conduits on your next job site, then feel free to give us a call on 1800 449 543.
Or, if you’d like to leave a comment or have a general discussion about what you saw in the video, then feel free to add it below and one of us—maybe even Ben—will jump on and respond back to you as soon as we’re next available.

If you don't know about the Dial Before You Dig certification, you can find out more about it here, at a blog post Ben wrote about it when it first came out: https://geelongcablelocations.com.au/...
And you can also read more about it on another blog post he wrote 12 months on from when it started, as well as some tips on how to know which locator to pick to come out to your site: https://geelongcablelocations.com.au/...
If you have a question about either of those blog posts—or better still if we can be of any assistance to you with any of your locating needs—or even if you’d just like to discuss a project you’re working on, then feel free to call us toll-free on 1800 449 543.
