Growing up, I never realized just how abusive my mom's behavior was. She was an expert at hiding it, always finding ways to justify her actions under the guise of love or discipline. She was always entitled to her abusive behavior, or at least that's what she gaslighted us to believe.
It wasn't until I had my own children that the full extent of it hit me. Watching my kids express themselves so freely, seeing their authentic selves shine without fear, I understood something profound: I had never been given that same freedom. I had never been loved simply for being me.
This realization was heartbreaking, but it was also a turning point. It fueled my commitment to ensure my children would always feel cherished for who they are, not for who someone wants them to be. And it started my own journey of healing, of rediscovering and loving my true self, free from the shadows of the past.
