Significance of Shigmo - The Festival of Colours

Shigmo is one of the most celebrated festivals in the Indian state of Goa.It is a festival of colours, dance, music, and well lit colourful float parades. This festival falls in the month of ‘Falgun’ as per the Hindu calendar which is generally in the month of March. However, the exact dates depend on the position of the moon each year. It is also known as the festival of colours for people in Goa or ‘spring festival’, the celebrations of this festival span fourteen days.

History of Shigmo Festival
Like each festival in India, Shigmo too has a history behind its celebration. In earlier days, Sigmo festival was celebrated to honour the homecoming warriors who left their families back home at the end of Dusshera (another important Hindu festival) to fight the invaders. In order to welcome them, people performed various traditional folk dances and enacted various scenes from mythological stories making it a huge celebration.

Shigmo Festival
Shigmo festival is the spring festival in Goa celebrated by the Konkani diaspora of Goa, with a lot of pompous and splendour. This festival takes place in the Phalguna month, according to the Saka calendar of the Hindu community living in Goa. This festival is celebrated around March every year.It is related to the Hindu lunar calendar and hence its date according to the Gregorian calendar varies.

Shigmo Festival is on Monday, 21st March 2022
Shigmo festival 2022 Goa would be celebrated in the month of Phalgun (March), beginning on the 9th moon day to the full moon day. The festival begins with the Naman (song) and the collective obeisance of the villagers. On the first day, the village deity is bathed and dressed in saffron robes. The 5th day is called 'Rang Panchami'. This day of rejoicing is celebrated with the profuse use of 'Gulal' or red powder. People smear gulal on each other as a gesture of greeting. On the 11th to 15th day, the villagers, clad in vibrant clothes carry dhwajas or torans along with beating drums and blowing the flutes, they assemble at the village temples. They perform the various folk dances like the 'Ghode-Morni' or the horse dance,Talgadi, Hanpet, Lamp dance,Gopha,'Rommatamel' and 'Fugdi' dances are performed by the villagers as part of the festivity. The intricately crafted floats form a major part of the festival.

Shigmo is a very traditional Goan festival, but it has never got the coverage that the Carnival celebrations in Goa have received. However, in recent years, the state government has been offered its support for Shigmo street parade at Goa. These floats are made up of traditional folk dances, street-dancers and floats depicting religious scenes. A spectacular Shigmo street parade is annually held in the Panjim city. Floats at the Shigmo parade are also held at the major cities like Margao, Mapusa, Vasco, and Ponda.
