First-ever inflatable wing sail technology is being mounted on a merchant ship

Описание: A "milestone" in shipping history was recently reached when automatic retractable inflatable wing sail technology was first installed on a commercial ship.

According to Michelin, a French industrial equipment provider, a 100 sqm wing prototype was installed aboard the container ship MN Pélican operated by Compagnie Maritime Nantaise.

The 1999-built commercial vessel is now undergoing installation of the WISAMO (Wing Sail and Mobility) project at the El Astillero Port in Spain.

The business says its prototype can be installed on any ship, whether it's a commercial or leisure vessel. Using wind energy, the system may potentially cut fuel use by up to 20% per vessel.

Both new ships and existing ships may benefit from the wing sail system, which can be installed at the time of construction or afterwards. This design works for a wide variety of ships, including ro-ro boats, bulk carriers, LNG carriers, and tankers. The manufacturer claims that it can be easily retracted for use beneath bridges and in port entrances.

The installation will allow Michellin to put the WISAMO wing through its paces in real-world commercial maritime navigation conditions as part of the new technology's industrial development phase.

Recent installations of wind propulsion technology on large commercial boats have increased the worldwide cargo capacity of ships utilising wind as a renewable energy source to over one million tonnes of deadweight.

Currently, there are twenty-one large commercial ships equipped with wind propulsion systems. Twenty-five large commercial vessels, with a combined displacement of 1.2 million dwt, will have wind propulsion systems installed by the end of this year, according to estimates from the International Wind Energy Association.

The marine sector has been very helpful to the globalisation process. 90% of all commerce is carried out on water. The cost to the environment, though, is significant.

One billion metric tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2), or three percent of all greenhouse gas emissions, is released into the atmosphere each year by container ships sailing the world's waterways.
