Doorstep Roman Archaeology

Описание: We really enjoyed filming #Vlog Nineteen - on our own doorstep.

There are many amazing things about Roman Britain, not least of all the extent of their occupation and presence in Britannia. We put that to the test here, by showing how close they were to home.

After a pleasant stroll through the woods, we're on the course of a vanished Roman Road. Or is it? There are actually a few physical traces to see here, along with frustrating accounts from the 18th Century - suggesting there was so much more, less than 300 years ago.

LiDAR has revealed a Romano British settlement above the road, and we visit that. Then it's across to the other side of the valley, where we unravel a mistake-ridden account from the 1920s/30s. We look at a sub-road leading to a settlement - of some kind - and then, thanks to Ed, we get to see some amazing metal detecting finds - unearthed on the day of filming.

Finally, we visit a field with a parch mark. So much in one short stroll from home. And we were back in time for tea as well.
