A panic attack is your body’s alarm system going off when there’s no real danger. It can feel scary — your heart races, your chest feels tight, your breathing gets fast or shallow, and you might feel dizzy, shaky, or like you’re not fully in your body. At the same time, your mind might tell you something is terribly wrong, like you’re losing control or in danger.
The important thing to know is: Panic attacks are not harmful. They are intense but temporary surges of your body’s stress response. They always pass, and your body will settle back to calm. Learning to understand what’s happening can help you feel less afraid when they come.
Tell yourself, "I am in control of my mind, I am in control of my body, I am safe now."
Drink cold water, and eat some food to help ground yourself, take a rest, or a bath.
Taking back control of your thoughts to bring yourself back into balance with your body to feel calm and grounded.
