Lubaga Cathedral, Uganda’s most iconic Catholic sanctuary, commands the city’s skyline as a symbol of faith, history, and architectural grandeur. Once the site of a Buganda royal palace, the cathedral’s foundation was laid in 1889 following a land donation by Kabaka Daniel Mwanga II to the French missionaries, setting in motion a decade-long construction that culminated in the consecration of St. Mary’s Cathedral Lubaga in 1925. With the cathedral set to commemorate 100 years of consecration on October 26th this year, our reporter, David Ijjo, traces the remarkable history of Lubaga Cathedral.
