Scooby-Doo! Classic Creepy Capers (Game Boy Color) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

Описание: A playthrough of THQ's 2001 license-based point-and-click graphic adventure game for the Nintendo Game Boy Color, Scooby-Doo! Classic Creep Capers.

Scooby-Doo seems to have far more luck with video game adaptations than most cartoon series do - the games are generally quite good (even with publishers like Acclaim and THQ!), and though it might seem a bit unlikely for a handheld title, the Game Boy Color version of Classic Creepy Capers is arguably the best one of the bunch.

Following in the same mold as 1995's Scooby-Doo Mystery on the Genesis (   • Scooby-Doo Mystery (Genesis) Playthrough -...   ), it plays like the old inventory-based adventure/puzzle games that were popular on the PC in the early 90s. If you've played King's Quest or a LucasArts SCUMM game, you'll immediately feel at home here.

Everything starts off with the Mystery Machine running out of gas in the middle of nowhere, but conveniently enough, they roll to a stop just outside the gates of a giant, scary looking mansion. If you squint your ears, you can almost hear Vincent Price's laugh as the gang contemplates their fate.

This scary house also happens to be the mansion of Dr. Jekyll, and the whole mystery plays out like a hammy ode to Stevenson's treatise on the duality of human nature.

It is far more successful at what it does with the story than the Bandai NES game was, I promise.

So anyway, the entire game revolves around you exploring the mansion and its grounds with each of the Scooby gang, solving puzzles and working together to solve a mystery and to find gas for their van. There is no action to the gameplay here, but rather, everything is done by selecting a verb+object combo through a streamlined, icon-based interface. You examine objects in the environments, talk to people for clues, pick up everything that's not nailed down, and think as far outside the box as you can when trying to put the clues together.

The puzzles will definitely make you think a bit, and thankfully there is a sense of logic to their humor-filled design, so you won't have to rely on sheer luck to get through it. If you're a genre veteran, though, it won't take you very long to go through the game, and it will probably feel very familiar to you: it's essentially a reimagining of Maniac Mansion with Scooby characters in it. It's also fairly easy for a graphic adventure.

But like the Genesis game I mentioned earlier, the thing that really makes Classic Creepy Capers feel so special is the way it captures the look and feel of the TV show. The writing nails the tone, flow, and personality of the show's dialogue, and the characters all feel true to themselves. The plot also feels like a scenario ripped directly out of the cartoon, complete with ridiculous hijinks that manage to be family-friendly while still providing the older crowd with numerous winks and nudges through clever innuendo.

Finally, the graphics on this GBC adventure are amazing. They seem to take most of their cues from Maniac Mansion, only with more detail and color. Each room is impressively detailed (which helps to avoid the always-dreaded pixel-hunt for items), and the animation is top-notch. Everyone has their signature walks and gestures, and the dialogue portraits look surprisingly close to the TV show. The music is not quite as memorable as the graphics, but then again, what else did it really need besides the Scooby theme song?

Overall, Scooby-Doo: Classic Creepy Capers is a terrific adaptation of the classic show, a heartfelt homage to Maniac Mansion and Day of the Tentacle, and a complete marvel for the magic it pulls off on the GBC's 8-bit hardware.
