On their first day on the job, bumbling prison guards Reggie Currelly and his beautiful partner unknowingly release two dim-witted bank robbers. Once they realize their mistake, they scramble to capture the felons before the ambitious new Warden learns what they have done, and ruins the careers of the retiring Warden and Reggie's Uncle. With the help of thief Wilson and smuggler Pat Morita, Reggie discovers the escapees are searching for $500,000 hidden in a decrepit 1979 Ford Pinto, culminating in a hilarious gunfight and crowd-pleasing finale.
