There are particular skills that children with Autism typically struggle with. This list will help with each…

10 expert strategies parents can use to help their child with Autism learn

1. Organizational Skills Help A TON In Children With ASD
a. People with Autism often struggle organizing both thoughts and actions.
b. As A Parent, Always praise your child when they remember to do something they had previously forgotten.
c. Practice organizational skills in small specific steps.
i. For example, keeping a calendar with homework assignments.

2. Difficulty with Abstract Concepts Is Common For People On The Autism Spectrum
a. Ideas without concrete form that cannot be adequately explained in scientific terms.
b. Avoid asking vague questions


3. Use Literal Speech Always
a. Always avoid using things such as;
i. idioms
ii. sarcasm
iii. Nicknames
b. Children with Autism have great difficulty relating to these figures of speech.


4. Small Steps Can Really Help Children With Special Needs
a. Especially if you notice your child having issues finishing a task
i. break it up into smaller steps and use visuals.
ii. For example, if your child is having trouble making their bed;
1. take pictures of each step and place them on a board in their room for reference.

5. Prepare for Changes In Advance For Children With Autism
a. This is BIG!
b. Children with Autism generally have great difficulty when routines are changed.
c. Try to use visuals or written schedules to prepare for any upcoming changes.

6. Watch for signs of Stress In Children With Autism
a. Watch for an increase in undesirable behavior or outbursts,
i. it probably means that your child is experiencing additional stressors.
b. Develop a program that allows your child to indicate this Stress such as;
i. a safe place
ii. a safe person

7. Verbal Overload For Children With Autism
a. When giving verbal directions
i. It can be VERY frustrating for individuals with Autism if too many steps are given at once.
b. Try to use shorter, concise instructions, such as “Get backpack” or “Dinner.”

8. Be Consistent In Everything You Do When It Comes To Autism
a. The more consistency you can provide for your child, the more successful they will be
b. Also, It’s essential that you make all the expectations clear.

9. Be Flexible With Your Child
a. Being flexible is very difficult for people with Autism.
b. This is exactly why it is so important for parents to be flexible for them!

10. Be Positive Always
a. There are so many things your child is good at!
b. Be positive and help them understand how awesome they truly are!

Some of these expert tips may seem very simple… almost too simple!

However, often these are the type of activities that are most often overlooked while they can help to make the most significant impact.
