One of our absolute favorite aspects of homeschooling is the flexibility it gives our family. My husband had the day off from work today, and so we decided to take a field trip! We will be covering medieval Europe next month for history, so what a perfect excuse for a school castle tour!
We drove by Thurant and Pyrmont castles, but our real focus of the day was the 850 year old Burg Eltz. Eltz castle is one of the only European medieval castles to have remained intact and free from damage over the centuries (due to some clever diplomatic moves), and the family retains the complex as a private residence to this day.
For only €30, our family was able to enter the castle grounds, take a guided (English) tour of several spaces within the castle (the stained glass and woodwork are INCREDIBLE!), as well as tour the armory and treasury (self guided, but English pamphlets are available at the front desk).
Due to Covid restrictions, there was about a forty minute wait outside of the castle, and we were very thankful for our rain jackets and umbrellas! Our Osprey daypack with its built in rain cover has also proved to be very practical in the us rainy German fall. Masks are required, and social distancing is marked in several areas. There are also several hikes in the forest and along the river for those wanting to stretch their legs after the tour.
Following our time at Burg Eltz, we spotted an enormous church in the distance along our drive. I am very thankful for a husband who is willing to take impromptu detours, and we ended up in the hallowed sanctuary of a 900 year old cathedral in Münstermaifield.
