Bob and Tom and their families both move into the same street on the same day. Unfortunately, neither of the boys are happy at home and during the events that follow, we are taken on a remarkable journey inside their minds. This is a story which examines the complexity of family dynamics and differing points of view, and in particular just how frightening the feelings of neglect and not belonging can be for a child, and their potential consequences.
Enid Blyton uses her razor-sharp understanding of children’s thought processes to express the feelings that Tom and Bob have, and uses her own experiences of her difficult childhood to really bring these characters to life.
When this book was first published in 1951, the children's magistrate Basil Henriques wrote that “the description of the workings of the minds of Bob and Tom is, in my opinion, absolutely brilliant…and the gradual deterioration of both boys is told in a manner which I have never seen surpassed.” He also gave Enid Blyton advice on the court procedures of the time.
Although much has changed since 1951, a child’s need to love and be loved has not.
