-After languishing for most of the 1995 season, the Yankees caught fire in September and went on a 22-6 run that enabled them to clinch their first postseason berth in 14 years. Here is the game from September 26 against the Brewers (who by contrast had been contending for the wildcard slot before going through a September collapse that saw them go 7-22). The full nine innings is called by Al Trautwig and Jim Kaat on MSG (Dave Cohen wasn't there that night).
-Notable about this game is that it is the only time in the September pennant stretch in which September call-up Derek Jeter got to play a role. Bernie Williams was late getting to the game due to a family emergency in Puerto Rico, so Jeter was put in the lineup at the start and he delivers a double in his only at bat. Once Williams got to the ballpark, Jeter was taken out and Randy Velarde shifted to shortstop, but it offers a harbinger of things to come.
-Take note of how Mariano Rivera is not effective in his 8th inning appearance, which explains in part why Buck Showalter didn't fully grasp what he had available to him in the 95 ALDS. Also note how the Yankees, to shore up their bullpen for the final week of the season with an extra lefthander, had gotten Rick Honeycutt from Oakland, who isn't effective either (but the Yankees hold on to win the game).
